The Mechanical

THE MECHANICAL at Theater for the New City April 23 – May 10

The Mechanical transports the outcast creature from Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein into the true story of a sensational chess-playing robot of the 18th Century, a novelty that amazed royalty, foreshadowed computers, and duped the public with its clever design. This strange tale brings to life an age of revolutions and the conflicts between science, art and religion.

“A fascinating story to tell, a stunning visual theatrical vocabulary, and skilled performers to pull both off.”
—Baltimore Sun

Traditional dance, live music, visual effects, filmed montages, and creative physicality bring this tapestry of stories to life. Traditional and original music accompany the production, played by rebob artist, Quraishi.

“The play has a quiet authority, even delicacy that is truly powerful.” – Margo Jefferson, The New York Times
