Dear Prospective Intern,

Thank you for your interest in Bond Street Theatre – a physical theatre company with a social consciousness, a global view, and a sense of humor.

The company was founded in 1976 with the idea that theatre has a unique ability to illuminate social, environmental and artistic concerns, and present them with wit and passion. Our interest is in reaching very diverse audiences – both in this country and globally – with original works which address current topics.

By training in a wide variety of physical and gestural arts, the ensemble has created an entertaining and flexible physical vocabulary which allows our theatre work to travel easily across lingual and cultural borders. Besides being an exciting and challenging field of study, our signature style presents us with opportunities to travel to many countries to perform, teach, meet other artists, and work in some very fascinating environments – including refugee camps and areas of conflict.

We look for interns who share our interest in global travel and world issues, have good physical training or a readiness to learn, and have other skills and interests to bring to the ensemble, such as musical or artistic abilities. Interns who have trained with us over a period of time frequently become ensemble members. We welcome interns in acting, stage management, arts administration, marketing, fundraising, technical theatre, set and costume design, mask-making, choreography and directing. We believe theatre to be a holistic craft and make sure our interns get experience in all phases of producing an ensemble-based theatrical arts organization.

Internships are custom designed to develop your specific interests and complement the company’s current activities. Generally, acting interns work directly with the company and are assimilated into daily events: attending rehearsals, building sets and costumes, making masks, assisting the director, stepping into roles as needed, stage managing, assisting with young audiences programs, doing some promotional or other office work, and generally participating in all company activities.

Some time is set aside for training in specific skills. Learning a musical instrument is recommended. Occasionally (as our schedule allows), we offer a structured program of classes open to the public covering a wide range of physical theatre skills. Interns attend these workshops as well as participating in general company activities.

Marketing, administration and development interns work with the company directors and staff on a regular schedule determined with each intern. Activities include: daily management activities, researching new performance opportunities, organizing tours, arranging international projects, fundraising, researching new funding sources, video-editing, designing marketing materials, press and media relations, maintaining the database, producing newsletters, and other activities.

Follow up with a call to the office to make an appointment to meet, discuss your hopes and dreams, and see if an internship with Bond Street Theatre is right for you and vice versa.
