Bond Street Theatre was founded in 1976 by a group of physically skilled and socially concerned actors and musicians. The ensemble’s method was shaped by their diversity of techniques and their mission motivated by their passion to be useful in this world.
The company creates innovative works that address social and environmental issues, and uses the performing arts as humanitarian outreach and a tool for education and healing. Our work brings us to refugee camps, areas of conflict and post-war environments. We collaborate with local artists to enjoy the benefits of artistic exchange and promote the value of the arts in shaping a peaceful future.
A Message from Joanna:
THE BEGINNING: On October 8, 1976, five people sat in a loft on Bond Street in New York City and, with the fervor, naivete, and love with which new ideas are born, the Bond Street Theatre Coalition came to be. What spark ignited the fire which has continued to burn for more than twenty-five years?
First, the company recognized theatre’s unique ability to illuminate social issues with wit and eloquence. Second, to reach the broadest audiences, we gathered performance techniques which would be the most captivating and the most universal. And third, to achieve a precision and united vision in our work, we saw the necessity to be an “ensemble”, a strong, well-trained unit of dedicated and multi-skilled artists.
