Two
skilled actors take school and
family audiences
on a trip to meet the Moco
Jumbie stilt-dancers of the
Caribbean, whose connections to the Spirit world allow them to dance on
stilts with amazing skill. In Italy,
we stop in Pantalone’s Pasta Palace and see what’s cooking with Arlecchino,
Pantalone’s comical servant. Heading
east, we encounter the legendary Monkey
King from China’s Flower and Fruit
Mountain. He is on a journey to find
the secret scrolls, but must get past an ugly demon named Pigsy. Finally
we arrive back in the US to hear an Iroquois tale about a Flying Head! All
sorts of visual treats from many cultures flavor the show, including stilts, masks, magic, acrobatics and
staff-twirling. There is a geography lesson too,
as the performers take us from place to place by illustrating “you are here”
on a large and colorful map backdrop. The
show is also a terrific introduction to a variety of theatrical styles, from
the slapstick comedy of the commedia dell’arte
to the precision of mime and the
acrobatic dexterity of the Peking Opera.
Plus,
the show includes audience participation.
A wonderful trip for all... and no visas required! Study
guide available. |
